Dolukanda / Arankele
Legend : During the epic battle between Lord Rama and King Ravana, both Lord Rama and his brother Lakshman were injured by powerful arrows which left Lakshman mortally wounded. Hanuman was instructed to locate and bring back a life saving herb
from the Himalaya mountain range to save Lakshman’s life. Legend states that Hanuman being unable to locate the specific medicinal herb lifted the whole peak and carried it to Lanka. It is said that along the way parts of the mountain broke away and
fell in five locations in Sri Lanka, Dolukanda being one of those sites.
The Dolukanda nature reserve is rich in unusual plants and herbs and is home to many natural caves and ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastic complex. Inscriptions found at the site dates back to the 6th Century BC.
