Bandarawela
Bandarawela is a picturesque town in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, steeped in Colonial history and surrounded by lush forestation. Due to its high altitude, Bandarawela is blessed with a cool climate throughout the year and popular among local holidaymakers.
The ancient Dhowa Buddhist rock temple is one of the main attractions of Bandarawela, founded by King Walagamba in the first century B.Cand located beside Badulla-Bandarawela highway this ancient temple is home to a 12 meter high Buddha statue scculpted from rock and paintings depicting Jataka stories (Buddhist narrative) belonging to the Kandyan era. Other popular sites in this region include the Roman Catholic St. Anthony’s Church and a local Methodist church.
