Adam’s Peak

Location : Central Highlands in the Ratnapura District and Nuwara Eliya district

Adam’s Peak

Adam's Peak or ‘Sri Pada’ meaning ‘sacred foot’ is a 2,243 meter high conical mountain located in central Sri Lanka. The trail to Adams peak is sacred to the four main religions of Sri Lanka, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. Buddhists believe that the large foot imprint in the shrine atop Adams peak was left by the Buddha. The Hindus worship at this site as they believe the footprint is of Lord Shiva. The Muslims consider it to be that of Adam whilst the Christians believe it to be the footprint of St.Thomas the Apostle who prayed on top of this summit.

Ascending the summit is an immensely gratifying experience best undertaken during the pilgrimage season between December to May. Visitors generally begin the climb around 2 am to reach the summit before sun rise in time to watch the magnificence of the giant triangular shadow of the Peak falling on the dense forests of peaks, valleys and plains that surround this monumental peak as the sun rises. As you ascend the 7,260 steps that take you to the summit the scenic views of the surrounding mountains with waterfalls and lush forests, will leave you in awe of nature’s glory.

Access to Adam’s Peak is possible by 6 routes namely the Ratnapura-Palabaddala, Hatton-Nallathanni, Kuruwita-Erathna, Murraywatte, Mookuwatte and Malimboda.
