Thotupola Kande (Mountain)
Thotupola kande rising 2,357 meters above sea level is the third highest peak in Sri Lanka. The trail to the summit starts at the Pattipola entrance to the Horton Plains. The best time to visit this beautiful mountain is during February to April and from July to September. The ascend is a 2 km hike and generally takes around an hour. The journey is a breathtaking experience along shrubs and wild flowers whilst enjoying the abundant bird life and occasional sambar on the way. Stunning views await climbers at the summit, of the surrounding mountain peaks shrouded by misty clouds and patches of dense forests.
According to legend, Tholtupola Kanda meaning landing site was the peak on which King Ravana landed his mythical flying machine on his return from India with his captive Queen Seetha.
