The Hill Country
Considered the most scenic part of the island nation, the hill Country consists of lush mountain peaks, breathtaking views, hillsides carpeted with tea plantations and astonishing waterfalls surrounded by a cool climate. This part of the Country remained only sparsely settled and cultivated until the arrival of the British in the 19th century, when the allure of the abundant rainfall combined with sunshine, cold nights and mists, offered the colonialists the perfect climate for producing teas – and so the world-famous industry of ‘Ceylon tea’ was born and is to this date one of the mainstays of the Country’s economy.
