Rainforests of Sri Lanka

Covering a land area of 124,340.8 hectares, about 2% of the Sri Lanka’s land area the local rainforests are treasure troves of biodiversity and natural beauty. Located mainly in the western and southern mountainous areas of the Country, these forests are home to many endemic flora and fauna and well worth a visit. Three of the famed rainforests in Sri Lanka are the Peak Wilderness, 250 km2; Knuckles, 175 km2; and the Sinharaja World Heritage Site, 90 km2.

In the yesteryear, rainforests consisted of over 26% of the Country’s land area and therefore, all rainforests in the island are now protected areas.
