Kitulgala

A small town surrounded by low wooded hills and lush vegetation with the ‘Kelani Ganga’ or river flowing through it, Kitulgala is one of the wettest places in Sri Lanka with two monsoons each year. The section of the Kelani river which flows through Kitulgala offers several spots famed for white water rafting with level two and level three rapids separated by a calm patch of the river.

Kitulgala is also known for being the picturesque location at which the award winning movie “Bridge on the River Kwai” directed by David Lean was filmed parts of the famed bridge can be still seen by visitors.

One of the other attractions of this area are the ‘Beli Lena Caves’ one of the largest caves in Sri Lanka. Situated about 8 km from Kitulgala, skeletal remains of the pre-historic “Balangoda man” (Homo sapiens Balangodensis) were unearthed at this site and are thought to be over 32,000 years old.
